The Truth about House Training Your Puppy

If you’re going to be house training your puppy you need two things — patience and the ability to stick to a schedule. The fact is, unless you consistently have a schedule you follow, you will just confuse the dog and make the process longer. Puppies will be used to a schedule they are supposed to follow every day. This will make teaching them new behaviors much easier.

The first thing you need to do is potty train your pet. Notice how long it takes them from when they drink and eat until when they relieve themselves. Pretty soon, you will begin to see a time pattern emerge. When you begin to see them going a certain time consistently after eating or drinking, you will realize that is how long they can hold their urine. Now it’s just a matter of getting them outside right before the time comes.

Typically, puppies are more likely to relieve themselves after eating, drinking, playing or sleeping. Plan on taking your puppy out at least five times a day, when first house training them. Additionally, if you take them on walks, don’t let them back in the house until after they have went to the restroom. Do this even if it means you have to wait a while outside. It will positively reinforce the puppy to relieve itself every time he goes outside.

Additionally, you must reinforce positive behavior. This means to give the dog praise and much attention when they do something right. At the same time, you must scold them when they do something wrong. This way the puppy will begin to understand right from wrong.

If a puppy does happen to relieve itself inside, it is important to cover up the smell. This way the puppy will not be tempted to sniff out the same spot, and relieve themselves again.

There you have it — a simple guide to house training your puppy.
