How to Exercise Your Puppy
If you’re going to keep your puppy healthy, it is important that you give him the proper exercise to keep him in shape. This is not very hard to do. Oftentimes, a brisk walk that lasts a half an hour to an hour will do the trick. It should be done every day.
If this is not possible, then make sure you give your puppy room outside to run and play in. This could include dog parks, your backyard or any other enclosed area where your puppy can run around outside and still be safe.
A lot of people exercise with their dogs. You can even train your dog to walk on a treadmill with you, or bring them to the high school track, and walk the track with them.
Of course, it depends on the type of dogs and their age, regarding how much you exercise them. A young puppy is going to have a lot more energy than in old dog. For a young pup, a run might be appropriate. For an old dog, a slow leisurely walked probably would be better.
When you first start to exercise your puppy, start in small amounts — 15 minutes or less. Ideally, you want to eventually build up their exercise to about an hour, as they get bigger and get in better shape.
If you’re going to walk your puppy at night, make sure that your clothing is light reflective, and can be seen easily from the road.
The best time of day to exercise your puppy is either before they eat their meal or right after. However, you do not want to exercise a puppy when the stomach is completely full, otherwise they may get sick.
Finally, it is important to check the puppy’s paws when they are done exercising. This is to make sure nothing has gotten stuck into them. Things to look for are ice, rocks, glass and other items that may cause soreness or infect the animals paws.
