Puppies are at risk to both internal and external parasites. in fact, there are so many that a puppy may contract, that you cannot even begin to list them all in a simple article. These parasites can occur even when the puppy is still in a fetal life stage. In fact, if this occurs, it is usually because the mother already has a parasite before she became pregnant.
In addition, parasites can be passed through the mother’s milk, as she feeds are puppies. Also, these parasites are active and quite mobile in most cases. This means that they can quickly take over the puppy’s body.
One of the worst internal parasites a puppy can have is called heartworm. This can be contracted by mosquitoes and is often fatal to the puppy. They are detected when a blood samples are taken by the veterinarian. Even when the results are negative, the vet will often still administer medicine just to be safe.
Most puppies are born with round worms. These are transmitted from the mother to the puppy or through the stool of another animal. It is important that you wash your hands after handling your puppies feces, because round worms can be transferred for the dog’s stool to a human. It is important to get your puppy wormed frequently.
Ticks are external parasites that puppies tend to get. These animals will leech onto the dogs skin, and are very hard to get off. In fact, you probably need tweezers to pull them off of the dogs skin. It is important that you do not use your fingers, because a tick can bite you and give you diseases such as Lyme disease. And it is important that you remove the whole tick from the dog’s skin, because a tick can burrow deep into the skin.
