A Guide to Puppy Development
A puppy is a lot like a child. They will go to many different stages, which will affect their diet, sleep patterns and their learning. In this article, we’ll talk about proper puppy development.
The first two or three weeks you get a puppy are usually the toughest. The puppy will be very immobile, and slow to open its eyes and move around. The only person the puppy is likely to recognize is its mom.
After three or four weeks, the puppy will then begin to recognize you as well. It is at this time when the personality of the puppy is beginning to develop. It is important that you do nothing to negatively impact their state of mind during this period. Keep things calm, and let the mother do the work.
Between the fourth and eighth week stage of the puppies development, it will begin to actively interact with its siblings. Also, the puppy will begin to play. It is at this time that weaning will occur. The mother will begin to teach the puppies new behaviors, and it is around this time to begin to feed them puppy food.
After eight weeks of development, this is when a puppy will become most fearful and anxious. It is important not to scold them too harshly. Also, you can begin to teach them simple behaviors.
When a puppy reaches three months of age, they will be very much independent. They may even begin to challenge you, to see what kind of authority you have. It is important to take a stern approach with them, and to distinguish between good and bad behaviors.
A puppy’s fourth month will bring about hormone changes in the dog. This will also interfere with your commands. It is at this time that the puppy begins teething as well. It is important to keep something cool around for the puppy to chew on during this time.
When a puppy reaches six months, then you may spay or neuter them.
