3 Keys to Puppy Safety
You need to make sure your puppy arrives home in a safe environment. To do that, you have to “puppy proof” your home. Think of it in the same way that you would safe-proof your house if you were bringing home a newborn infant. The puppy is just like an infant — curious about everything, and not able to discern between what is right and what is wrong.
For example, it is important to keep hazardous things away from the puppy, so the puppy will not ingest them. These include poisons such as household cleaners, detergents, bleach and mothballs. If a puppy ingests these things, they can become quite sick, and in some cases even die.
Make sure you are aware of the different types of plants you have around your home. Some of these can kill a puppy. For example, tomato vines, aloe vera, elephant ears, Easter lilies and so on can make a puppy ill. In addition, make sure to keep Apple seeds, apricot and peach pits away from the puppy as well.
It is important that you keep your toilet lid down, when it is not in use. You do not want your puppy drinking and playing in toilet water. Not only is it unsanitary, but the cleaners used in toilets can be hazardous to a puppy’s health.
Also, keep the puppy away from electrical cords. They can chew through these cords and electrocute themselves, or start an electrical fire. Hide cords or unplug them when not in use to keep your home and puppy safe.
Finally, if you live in a high-rise apartment, or have a second floor, make sure all doors to balconies and porches are shut tightly. Small animals can sometimes go through the railing of about any and fall and hurt themselves.
It is important, for your puppy’s safety, to save proof your home before bringing the puppy into it.
